15 Stalls to Try at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market

Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market is tucked away in a mature housing estate and far off from the tourist belt, but sometimes it’s these places that have the best hawker stalls! Just a ten-minute walk away from Bedok MRT station, it is also highly accessible. The number of stalls with snaking queues here is pretty mindblowing, which is a testament to the food you’ll find here! From unique chee cheong fun topped with crispy beancurd skin to fried carrot cake sticks, here are 15 stalls here that we definitely recommend!

#1 Hon Ni Kitchen

For some cheap and good Chinese style nasi lemak, head on over to Hon Ni Kitchen. It has snaking long queues, especially on weekend mornings, and you’ll be hard pressed to miss the stall. The aromatic rice is light and fluffy, filled with a coconut-y fragrance, and simply satisfying when paired with the sides like deep-fried chicken wings, otah, luncheon meat and sambal long beans. And of course, make sure to complete the plate with a dollop of their homemade sambal chilli!

#2 Low Seng Kim

Low Seng Kim has been around since 1973, specialising in mee siam and mee rebus. Amongst all the stalls with a long queue, it’s easy to miss Low Seng Kim. Mildly spicy with an acidic kick, the mee siam tastes just as good as many famous Malay stalls out there. To make it more substantial, add on a piece of fried tofu or fried fish cake. Simply delicious and affordable.

#3 Han Kee Fish Soup

Han Kee Fish Soup has one of the longest queues here at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market, so be prepared to wait a good 20 minutes for your food. It will be worth it however, as they’re known for their incredibly tasty soup and the fish which is thick and fresh. They are very generous with their servings and they also serve braised dishes as sides to go along with the fish soup!

#4 Hougang Lee Chen Cooked Food

The other popular Teochew fish soup stall, Hougang Lee Chen Cooked Food serves similarly fresh and sweet batang fish slices in a savoury sweet clear soup with generous amounts of lettuce. It is slightly heavier tasting as compared to Han Kee which is more mild, and fried garlic bits add some savoury-umami too. If you’re lucky enough to get it, make sure to get the roe too as they’re simply delicious and often get sold out fast!

#5 Chris Kway Chap

Often regarded as one of Singapore’s best kway chap, Chris Kway Chap is only open four days a week from Thursday to Sunday. The secret is in its braising liquid – a sweet and savoury mixture with herbal notes. All the ingredients, from hefty pork belly to thoroughly cleaned intestines, are braised for hours in this potent broth. Though not the cheapest out here, it still has a throng of loyal customers that swear by it.

#6 Chai Chee Kway Chap

Another popular kway chap stall at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market, Chai Chee Kway Chap has a more robust soy flavour which you can tell by the darker broth. With prices starting at $3.40, it is more affordable than its competitor, and we also find it to be more of a textural delight as the stewed items isn’t as soft-mushy. Which is the best kway chap stall? You be the judge!

#7 Hong Heng Teochew Carrot Cake

Hong Heng Teochew Carrot Cake only opens in the morning until around noon. Whether you’re in team black carrot cake or white carrot cake, Hong Heng nails both the different renditions with a great char and fluffy, flavourful carrot cake. Such deliciousness does come at a small price – which is a wait of up to 20 minutes!

Contrary to traditional fried carrot cake, Chai Chee Fried Carrot Cake offers patrons a bag full of thick fried carrot cake strips. They look like fries and are just as addictive! Bite into the crisp exterior to reveal soft toasty carrot cake underneath. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

#9 Joo Chiat Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles

An old-school hawker stall selling traditional prawn noodles, Joo Chiat Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles has a wide combination of pork and prawn on their menu, which is uncommon and you don’t usually see that at other prawn mee stalls. Whether you fancy pig intestines, pigtails, pork ribs, prawns or big prawns, chances are you’ll find it on the menu.

#10 Prawn & Mee

Another prawn noodles stall in Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market, but this is run by two young hawkers instead. Find prawn & pork rib noodles both in soup and dry versions. For the dry version, the noodles are tossed in a lardy, savoury, and sweet sauce with a spicy sting. The prawns are served deshelled with the head and tail intact, which makes for easy consumption and no need to get your hands involved!

#11 Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee

Lor mee connoisseurs will know Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee as one of the best lor mee in Singapore. Looking at Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee, one can't help but notice how similar this actually looks. This is because it is run by the sisters of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee's owner, and the lor mee is made using the same recipe. Each bowl comes loaded with shredded fish, braised pork, braised egg, beansprouts, parsley and a spoonful of homemade chilli. If you like lor mee but not a fan of insane queues, you should most definitely check out Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee.

#12 Joo Chiat Chiap Kee

If you’re craving for some great fishball noodles, Joo Chiat Chiap Kee serves yummy noodles that come with delightfully springy and chewy fishballs. They are tossed in a lardy, savoury, spicy sauce and the fishballs and dumplings are completely hand made at the stall. There might be better fishball noodles elsewhere in Singapore, but here in Bedok Joo Chiat Chiap Kee reigns as king.

#13 Ma Bo Lor Mee

The long queue is a giveaway that this place serves up some pretty solid lor mee. At just $2.50, you really get your money’s worth with strips of stewed pork belly, fried battered fish, stewed egg and fish cake slices. There are many Ma Bo Lor Mee outlets around Singapore, but this is probably the one that commands the longest queue.

#14 Yummy

If you love chee cheong fun, here is an interesting one to try for breakfast. Yummy serves their chee cheong fun topped with freshly fried beancurd skin, which adds a nice crunchy addition to the dish. Their sweet and spicy sauce ties the whole dish together but if you’d like something more substantial, they also have a few options on the menu, some with yam cake, rice dumplings and glutinous rice.

#15 Sin Ho

In the evening most of the stalls here are closed, but Sin Ho and its authentic tze char is one of the hidden gems for dinner. They are perhaps best known for their har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) which routinely sells out by 8pm, and is also touted to be one of the best har cheong gai in Singapore. Another signature dish here is the Bitter Gourd Fish Head, but we highly suggest coming early to avoid disappointment!
