15 Stalls to Try Out at Empress Road Food Centre

Empress Place Food Centre is otherwise known as Farrer Road Food Centre due to its location along Farrer Road. Although the food centre is pretty small, you can still find a great variety of affordable food available with popular dishes such as wanton mee, fishball noodles, biryani, chicken rice and more. Most of the stalls here are only open till the afternoon, making it a popular breakfast or lunch spot! Here are 15 stalls that you should try out.

#1 Ah Wing’s Wanton Mee

Arguably the most popular stall at Empress Road Food Centre, the owner of this wanton mee stall hails from Hong Kong. You’ll find dishes such as Char Siew Wanton Noodles, Shredded Chicken and Prawns Noodles, Mushroom Chicken Feet Noodles and more. The Hong Kong-style char siew is well-marinated, tender and nicely caramelised, while the noodles are delightfully springy and cooked just right. It comes with a side of soup with wantons that are plump, juicy and bursting with flavour!

#2 Somerset Fishball Noodle

Somerset Fishball Noodle has a history of over 40 years, previously selling in Somerset. They took a break and are now back in action at Empress Road Food Centre. Their fishballs here are handmade from suppliers and other than Fishball Noodle you’ll also find dishes such as Gui Fei Abalone Noodle and Minced Meat Noodle Laksa. The fishballs are succulent and bouncy and simply delicious with the noodles that are tossed in a savoury, vinegary and spicy sauce.

#3 Happy World Roast

Happy World Roast was previously situated at Sixth Avenue and has been in the business since the 1960s. Now helmed by the third generation, the stall offers Char Siew Rice, Roasted Pork Belly Rice, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Shrimp Dumpling Noodle, Char Siew Wanton Noodles and more. The char siew here is beautifully charred and covered in a dark sweet sauce – it’s not hard to see why they sell out frequently! The roast pork has a delightful crunch as well. Come early so as to not be disappointed!

#4 Fu Gui Bak Chor Mee

Fu Gui Bak Chor Mee is another popular noodle stall at Empress Road Food Centre Stall. While the menu isn’t extensive with Minced Meat Noodles, Fish Ball Noodles and Laksa, they sell out well before closing time sometimes! Their signature BCM features flavourful, springy noodles and bouncy fishballs, in your choice of soup or dry. Other ingredients include fish dumpling, sliced fishcakes,and minced pork topped off with some fried ikan bilis!

#5 Farrer Road Chicken Rice

This husband-wife duo helms Farrer Road Chicken Rice, another stall that commands a long snaking queue and they are usually sold out by noon. Get your fix of steamed chicken or roasted chicken, as well as roast meat and char siew. Your choice of meat is served with bed of rice that is fragrant and fluffy without being overly greasy, and it also comes with beansprouts, vegetables and a bowl of soup.

#6 Heng Heng Nasi Lemak

This stall starts very early in the morning to serve local breakfast items such as like economic fried bee hoon and mee together with nasi lemak, chee cheong fun and chwee kueh. They have ingredients such as fried meatballs, fried wantons, fish fillet, and not forgetting the quintessential chicken wings with a crispy exterior and tender meat!

#7 Nur Aishah Muslim Food Stall

Nur Aishah Muslim Food Stall offers familiar Malay dishes like Mee Soto, Mee Rebus, Mee Siam, Lontong and Tahu Goreng. But you’d best get up early for this, because they often sell out by 11:30 am!

#8 Bunga Raya Prata Hut

You’ll be able to get your fix of many Indian dishes at Bunga Raya Prata Hut such as prata, murtabak, biryani and more. Their Plain Prata arrives hot and crispy and you can pair it with mutton, chicken or fish curry. #9 Hilltop Hokkien Mee

Run by three young hawkers, Hilltop is a relatively new stall in Empress Road Food Centre selling fried hokkien mee. It quickly gained popularity as it’s the only stall serving the dish here. A plate of their signature includes yellow noodles with a higher ratio of thick bee hoon than what you’d usually find. It is of the wetter variety and also comes with two large prawns, squid, pork belly slices, a lime and garnished with some crispy pork lards! The belachan chilli is slightly citrusy and pairs well with the noodles.

#10 Chicks N Chops

Chicks N Chops is touted to serve the ‘Best Chicken Chop’ and has been around since 1977. The best seller is the Fried Chicken Chop with Rice that is served with sweet & sour sauce with slices of pineapple, onion and peas. Their Grilled Chicken Chop is also listed as a must-try on their menu and it is served with a portion of fries, baked beans and coleslaw with their special chilli sauce.

#11 Yu Kee Braised Duck

If Yu Kee sounds familiar, it’s because there are two “Yu Kee” brands in Singapore that have branched out from the same family. The braised ducks at this Yu Kee are still prepared using the grandfather’s original recipe, with hand-picked herbs used to cook the braising sauce. Dishes on the menu include Happy Duck Rice, Duck Noodles, Duck Porridge, and Kwap Chap.

#12 Kuehs and Snacks

Kuehs and Snacks serve traditional handmade Teochew kuehs including Ang Ku Kueh, Bamboo Shoot Kueh, Png Kueh, Soon Kueh and many more. The Png Kueh comes filled with glutinous rice, mushroom, dried shrimp and peanuts while the Soon Kueh is generously filled with bamboo shoots, chicken bits and mushroom. They’re great on its own but taste great too when drizzled with some sweet sauce!
