Eastsiders would be no strangers to Katong Shopping Centre, a historical mall once full of dress-makers and tailors, now filled with tuition centres and maid agencies, and even a Ghostbuster shop! When it comes to Katong Shopping Centre food, it is perhaps most famous for being the homeground of Katong Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice and Dona Manis Cake Shop. But a new food court was also recently unveiled at the mall which has a good variety of interesting stalls! Without further ado, let’s check out some of the best Katong Shopping Centre food and eateries to try.
I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t love yong tau foo. It’s versatile, you get to pick your own ingredients, and it’s economical. At Katong Yong Tau Foo, seven items including rice or noodles goes for just $4.90! You can top up a bit extra for their laksa gravy, which is some of the most authentic ones you’ll find at a yong tau foo stall. It is rich, savoury, coconutty and creamy, and the addition of laksa leaves added a distinct earthy and nutty aftertaste. The stall also has a large array of ingredients to choose from including some unorthodox ones like kakiage, hash browns and fried you tiao!

Just down from Dona Manis Cake Shop is Katong Mei Wei Boneless Chicken Rice. A crowd pleaser among the Easties and with no shortage of queues everyday, some may even say that this is the best chicken rice in Singapore. What’s so special about their chicken is that it’s served with crispy fried garlic bits, complimentary soup as well as free-flow achar! The soup here also isn’t the typical MSG-laden soup you might find at other stalls. Instead, it is a legit home-style chicken soup complete with cabbage, pork ribs, corn and carrots!

Dona Manis Cake Shop supposedly makes the best banana pie in all of Singapore. Having been around for more than 30 years, this traditional bakery dishes out yummy bakes like the famous banana pie, cream puffs and chocolate tarts. They used to have more items on the menu including butter buns and hotdog buns, but unfortunately had to scale back on these due to a lack of manpower. Make sure to get there early for their banana pies, as they tend to sell out before 4pm! Crumbly, buttery and gooey, it makes for the perfect tea time snack with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

Auntie Jessie Rojak’s newest outlet is in the newly opened food court in Katong Shopping Centre. Apart from their signature rojak, the Katong branch also feature an almost-extinct traditional dish in Singapore – taukwa pau! Otherwise known as a stuffed beancurd, Auntie Jessie’s taukwa pau features stewed and fried ingredients stuffed in fried beancurd. The soft insides combined with the savoury brown sauce creates a nostalgic and comforting taste. Other yummy local dishes to check out on the menu include popiah, kueh pie tee and muah chee!

Neighbouring Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice is Ipoh Tuck Kee Son, which is known for its wok-derful tze char offerings. Many come just to get their hands on their Moonlight Hor Fun, and it’s not hard to see why. Glistening and slightly charred, the dish is filled with wok-fried goodness. Worth a mention is also their Dai Loke Mee, a Malaysian dish that is not that common in Singapore! Stir fried in a silky dark soy sauce, the noodles are thick and tender with a pleasant chewiness.

For your fix of mala xiang guo, head on over to Zhong Hua Guo Wang, which also occupies a stall at the new food court.
