#1 Hong Heng Beef Noodle Soup & Laksa

It’s rare that you see beef noodles and laksa sold together, but that’s exactly what you get at Hong Heng. While it sells unique variations like mixed beef in laksa, their dry beef noodles is also a reliable go-to, served with juicy beef slices, beef balls, tendons and garnished with chopped greens. The gravy leans more toward the watery side unlike some gooey sauces, but it still has robust flavours, piquant with a squeeze of lime.

#2 Seletar Sheng Mian Mian Fen Guo

Compared to other ban mian stalls with various combinations of toppings, this stall has a straightforward choice of Mee Hoon Kway and Sheng Mian, both available in soup and dry versions. The dry version features an umami and savoury sauce, along with fried shallots and crispy ikan bilis for added texture, while the soup version is light but flavourful. The stall attracts a constant queue and seems to be especially popular with the elderly!

#3 Hock Kee Wanton Noodle

With over 30 years of history, Hock Kee serves old-school wanton noodles with springy noodles, thin slices of char siew and blanched veggies. Crispy pork lard is also added for an extra touch of flavour and texture. However, the star of the show here is the wantons which are hand-wrapped everyday. They are well-seasoned with peppery notes and make for a delightful simple meal.

Teck Kee Cooked Food has a seemingly neverending queue of customers hungry their unique rendition of sheng mian. Nicknamed “Singapore ramen”, what makes their noodles so special is the rich, full-bodied broth that is reminiscent of Japanese tonkotsu broth. It’s also comes with a good variety of ingredients such as fish balls, minced meat, pig liver, fishcake slices, lettuce and pork lard. It also comes in a dry version that is tossed in a savoury sauce mix!

#6 Huang Fu Duck Rice

The owner of Huang Fu Duck Rice only uses ducks that are 2.7-2.8kg for the perfect meat texture. If the duck is too heavy, the meat will be tough. And if it is too skinny, there will not be enough fats. Each duck is braised with over 10 herbs including star anise, dang gui and cinnamon. Apart from duck rice, you can also get kway chap and porridge here!

Helmed by an ex-Mariott chef, Guangdong Claypot Rice serves a wide variety of cheap and good claypot dishes. Some popular options include the Claypot Chicken Rice and Claypot Pork Ribs Rice. Expect to wait as each one is made to order, but the wait is well worth it with its dark sauce mix, smoky aroma, and crusted burned rice!

#8 Pin’s Kitchen

For a hearty tze char meal, head on over to Pin’s Kitchen. Their signature dish is the Curry Fish Head which features a whole fish head swimming in a smooth, fiery gravy along with eggplant, long beans, onions and tau kee. The gravy is creamy and simply perfect with a bowl of white rice. If you’re not feeling curry, the stall also has other dishes such as sweet and sour pork, kung pao chicken, mee goreng and many more!

The name of this stall translates to “unique fragrance” in English, and true enough, their noodles are real fragrant. Qi Xiang always has a queue whether it’s the weekdays or weekends. Apart from their fried bee hoon, they also serve bee tai bak and kway teow that are both great options too and has a fragrant wok hei. If you are lucky, you might even be able to get a taste of their fried chicken and fish with Thai sauce!

Specialising in kueh and small bites, you’ll have to get up really early for the soon kueh here as a line starts forming as early as 7am. You’ll also find other items on the menu such as pumpkin kueh, fried carrot cake and fried bee hoon.
