21 Stalls to Try at the New Margaret Drive Hawker Centre

The original Margaret Drive Hawker Centre operated from 1969 to 2011. This all-new Margaret Drive Hawker Centre is at a different location which is actually on Margaret Drive, and the two-storey, well-ventilated development houses a good share of beloved vendors from the now-defunct Tanglin Halt Food Centre. From the comforting dishes at Chef Hainanese Western Foods and Nine Miles Chicken Stew, to the refreshing sweet treats from Ah Luck Desserts and thirst-quenching drinks at Ichigo Cottage, food options are indeed aplenty here.

#1 Ru Yi Yuan Vegetarian

Formerly located at Tanglin Halt for over 30 years, Ru Yi Yuan is another stall that has relocated to Margaret Drive Hawker Centre. Their most popular item is the Bee Hoon which comes with an assortment of fried ingredients such as beancurd skin, mock meats, and mixed vegetables. For a tasty snack, go for their crowd-favourite vegetarian Popiah, which sports a thin and crispy skin, stuffed with juicy and savoury veggies that won’t make you miss meat at all.

#2 Tong Kee Chicken Rice

Tong Kee Chicken Rice used to be at the original Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, as it was there that they established their name in 1969. The business is currently in its second generation and helmed by the owner’s son who has inherited the family heirloom recipe. Diners often go for its signature roast chicken, which is firm but also succulent and juicy. Customers can also find an occasional Poached Chicken, along with Char Siew and Crispy Sio Bak. Two thumbs up to the fragrant and flavourful chicken rice too, as well as the side of soup that has a wonderful peppery kick!

#3 Hakka Thunder Tea

Drawing in one of the longest lines at Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, Hakka Thunder Tea serves a house-made yong tau foo filled with minced pork and fish paste, but they’re better known for their Thunder Tea Rice. It comes with generous portions of stir-fried cabbage, spinach, tofu, preserved vegetables, anchovies and peanuts, alongside a bowl of earthy, herbaceous tea and your choice of brown or white rice.

#4 Chef Hainanese Western Food

Helmed by a father-son duo, this stall serves hearty portions of grilled Hainanese-style Western food for dinner. Some of the most popular items include the Mixed Grill Platter which consists of pork chop, chicken chop, fish cutlet and chicken sausage. Along with the meats, the meal also comes with accompanying sides of coleslaw, baked beans, baked potato, and fries. Portions are generous and will definitely satisfy those with big appetites!

#5 Nine Miles Chicken Stew

Even though its shop name is Nine Miles Chicken Stew, this stall’s focus is actually on Cantonese-style congee. You’ll find comforting favourites such as Century Egg & Pork Porridge and Sliced & Pork Ball Porridge, or the hearty Mixed Pork Porridge which comes with sliced pig liver, green onions, and bits of you tiao. Besides the silky smooth congee, they also offer side dishes like Claypot Liver, Claypot Sliced Pork, and Ginger & Onion Sliced Fish.

#6 No.1 Western Food

No.1 Western Food is another old-school Western food stall in Margaret Drive Hawker Centre dishing out well-grilled, meaty delights in generous portions. A must-try is their amazing Chicken Cutlet which is served with a special tomato-barbeque sauce. Deep fried to golden perfection, the sauce has a sweet-savoury flavour with a hint of tanginess that cuts through any greasiness and savouriness of the cutlet. Your plate will also come with fries, baked beans and slices of cucumber!

#7 Queenstown Lontong

Another popular stall here is Queenstown Lontong, which has been serving drool-worthy, halal-certified lontong since the 1960s and its recipe handed down for three generations. Swimming in a thick, luscious and coconut-scented gravy and topped with a dollop of spicy sambal is large, soft chunks of rice cakes. The stall also serves other favourites such as Soto Ayam, Nasi Lemak, Mee Rebus and Mee Soto. They tend to sell out early given their popularity, so come early to avoid disappointment!

#8 28 Rojak

28 Rojak serves rojak made without any pork or lard. A portion features ingredients such as crunchy turnip, sliced cucumbers, pineapple, tau pok, fresh beansprouts and fried dough fritters tossed in a fragrant sweet-spicy sauce and topped with a heaping of crushed peanuts. They also make a decent popiah that’s stuffed with beansprouts, egg and bamboo shoots with hints of coriander and fried garlic!

With a self-explanatory name, this is where to get your fix of Prawn Mee that comes in four variations: Prawn Noodle, Pork Ribs Noodle, Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle, and Pig’s Tail Prawn Noodle. The yellow noodles are not overly alkaline-tasting and the prawns are fresh and sweet. The heady broth is rich and you can tell that it’s been simmered for long hours to fully extract the prawny flavours!

Formerly located in Tanglin Halt as well, Sukarnih Chicken Rice serves halal-certified Hainanese Chicken Rice and Chicken Noodles. Regulars love their moist and tender chicken meat with fragrant rice, which pairs well with their chicken soup. If you love a healthy dose of spice in your food, go for the Chicken Noodles which is made with thin yellow noodles, and request for an extra helping of their house-made garlic chilli sauce!

Savour humble and hearty dishes like Nasi Goreng Ayam and Kway Teow Goreng. The owners are generous with their portions, so be sure to come hungry or bring a friend to share with! If you only have space for a snack, go for the Roti John, which is stuffed with well-marinated mutton bits and pan-fried with an egg mixture.

Feast on grilled meat skewers to your heart’s content DJ Satay Grill, a Muslim-owned establishment where you’ll find grilled mutton, chicken and beef. They have a nicely charred exterior and tender interior and come served with ketupat, cucumber slices and red onions. They also have Fish Otah on the menu! Of course, the mandatory peanut dipping sauce deserves a mention too, which has a lovely fragrance and a mild hint of spice.

#16 Alimah’s Kitchen

This low-key, under-the-radar Muslim stall is also deserving of support, and many say that their Nasi Lemak with fragrant rice and crispy wings is better than some of the famous brands out there. Run by a husband-and-wife team, they also serve up Mee Rebus, Mee Siam, Lontong, Nasi Sambal Goreng and Lotong Kering, all at very affordable prices. If you’re lucky you might even get a chance to try their Kuih Kuih and Epok Epok, which are also well-received!

Xin’s Tzechar boasts an impressive menu with 35 dishes, with options such as Seafood Hor Fun, Yang Zhou Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Pork, Bitter Gourd Fish Head with Soy Sauce and Sheng Mian, which comes with two large prawns and fresh, thick cuts of fish, along with flying chopsticks! While the reviews are generally mixed, we say the owners display great effort in perfecting their dishes.
