#1 Ippoh Tempura Bar by Ginza Ippoh

Opened by Ippoh, Osaka’s oldest premium tempura restaurant, Ippoh Tempura Bar features Osaka-style tempura omakase in a refined setting at Dempsey Hill. Go for the Momiji which comes with sesame tofu, nine pieces of tempura, kakiage and your choice of dessert. Coated in a veil of gossamer-light batter, every piece of tempura is served piece by piece alongside a delicate seasoning that compliments the natural flavours of the ingredients!

#2 Tenya

Tempura Tendon Tenya is Japan’s most famous tendon chain restaurant, opening here in 2020 to much fanfare. An abbreviation for tempura don, the tendon here is light, airy and crispy, and comes drizzled with Tenya’s signature tare sauce. It’s specially blended for Tenya by a traditional soy sauce maker in Japan and has grilled eel essence in it, giving it an extra oomph in flavour. Seafood lovers should try the Seafood Tendon which comes with an assortment of tempura Black Tiger prawn, anago, scallop, red fish, pumpkin and French beans. Or, go for the Tori Tendon which is mix of tempura chicken, chicken karaage, tempura egg, sweet potato and pumpkin. Those who prefer noodles will be glad to know that there are also soba, somen and udon alternatives!

#3 Ginza Tendon Itsuki

One of the most popular eateries in the CBD along Tanjong Pagar Road, Ginza Tendon Itsuki is Ramen Keisuke’s first concept store that’s established in collaboration with the highly acclaimed Ginza Itsuki Sushi restaurant in Tokyo. The tempura ingredients are coated in a light batter and only deep-fried upon order, so they arrive hot and crispy on the outside, while succulent on the inside. Try the Special Tendon which comes with large prawns, chicken breast meat, vegetables and a gooey tempura egg, or the Seafood Tendon that’s loaded with, salmon, scallop, prawns, white fish, squid and vegetables. There’s also the vegetarian-friendly Vegetable Tendon for non-meat eaters!

Situated in Shaw Centre and Raffles City, Tenjin has a lean menu of six tempura sets. There are options such as the Premium Set which features novel tempura offerings such as anago and crab leg alongside prawn, fish, egg and vegetable items, plus miso soup and a side salad. Vegetarians can opt for a set that comes with five different kinds of vegetables. While they’re known for their beef dishes, Niku Kappo also does a delicious Niku Tendon.
