Forget everything you know about ordering coffee because Beach Road's newest café is serving drinks straight from taps like it's some kind of sci-fi movie. 2050 Coffee, originating from Kyoto and founded by the creator of Japan's renowned Kurasu, has opened its second global outlet at 267 Beach Road, Singapore. And honestly, stepping inside feels like you've been transported to the future.

The Space Screams "Welcome to the Future"

The café boasts chic industrial aesthetics, exposed concrete walls, and a key defining feature: sleek coffee dispensers. Stepping into 2050 Coffee does feel like entering a sleek, futuristic cafe. The smooth concrete-grey walls and floors create a calming backdrop, while the curved counters and glowing light panels give the space an ultra-modern vibe.

The minimalist interior is all about those smooth grey tones and metallic accents. There's even a literal tree positioned under a skylight that's already become an Instagram hotspot. The location in Singapore is also decked in an industrial, space-age aesthetic that can be described as pretty ultra-modern — there is the large use of grey elements such as that of raw concrete finishings, fittings lit with white light, as well as the use of metallic elements throughout the entire space.

Coffee and Matcha Straight from the Tap (Yes, Really)

Here's where things get interesting. All you need to do is place your cup under the tap and it'll automatically dispense your coffee! The automated taps are the main attraction here, dispensing everything from single-origin brews to matcha lattes.

The tap coffee lineup includes:

  • Ethiopia Natural (S$8.50, hot only) - started with refreshing brightness, with the passionfruit and cardamom shining through. As the coffee cooled, the flavours deepened, with the fermented fruit adding a subtle complexity.

  • 2050 House Blend (S$7.50) - a dark roast featuring orange peel and dark chocolate flavours

  • Mexico (S$8) - a unique semi-washed single-origin coffee with tasting notes of apple, green grapes, poached pear, and iced lemon tea. This one stood out with its clean, tea-like finish and delicate fruitiness.

  • Iced Matcha Latte (S$7.50) - using the same matcha as Kurasu. It's a well-balanced rendition which is earthy and fragrant, but contrasted with a touch of sweetness.

For those who prefer traditional espresso drinks, they also serve lattes starting from S$6.50 and americanos from S$5.50, made using a special machine for espresso that is designed to use multiple beans without the need for calibration in between.

More Than Just a Gimmick - A Serious Mission Behind the Name

The name arises from "the 2050 problem", a much-discussed issue in the coffee industry that refers to the impending scarcity of coffee, due to climate change and an unsustainable and exploitative coffee-farming landscape. The aim of this selective process is to create an accessible and scalable outlet for high-quality ethical coffee which, in turn, prioritises supply chain sustainability.

The café exclusively partners with farms that practice regenerative agriculture methods, making every sip a small step toward environmental sustainability. It's not just about the cool factor - there's genuine purpose behind the concept.

The Kurasu Connection

The brand originates from Kyoto and was started in 2024 by the owner of renowned Japanese specialty coffee brand Kurasu, which also has two very popular branches in Singapore. If you're already a fan of Kurasu's coffee, you'll appreciate the quality standards maintained at 2050 Coffee, but with a completely different vibe and serving method.
