Hiap Joo Vending Machine: JB's Iconic Banana Cake in Singapore

Beloved by Singaporeans who make the journey to Johor Bahru, Hiap Joo Bakery's legendary banana cake is now available without crossing the border. The century-old Malaysian bakery has launched its first-ever vending machine at Senja Hawker Centre in Bukit Panjang, bringing their iconic treat directly to Singapore's heartlands.

Launched by HYPHA Vending Retail (the company also behind Butter Town's Shio Pan 'ATM'), the sleek machine is located near the bus stop along Senja Road. It operates daily from 6:30am to 9pm, with fresh restocks at 11:30am and 4:30pm.

What Makes This Banana Cake Special?

Each box from the vending machine contains 10 slices of Hiap Joo's signature banana cake, priced at $8.60 more than twice you'd pay in JB (RM13, about S$3.93)

The cake's distinctive qualities come from its traditional preparation methods. Made with high-quality Malaysian berangan bananas and baked in a wood-fired oven using rubber or bakau trees, the cake offers a uniquely moist texture with natural sweetness and subtle smokiness that modern ovens cannot replicate.

"Hiap Joo Banana cakes contain no added preservatives," explains Serene Ong, founder of HYPHA Vending Retail. "They are transported chilled and stored in refrigerated vending machines. We recommend warming them up for one to two minutes in the microwave before enjoying."

Heritage in a Modern Format

Founded in 1919, Hiap Joo has built its reputation on traditional baking methods. The original bakery, located just a kilometer from the Causeway checkpoint in JB, typically draws long queues of loyal customers daily.

The vending machine offers a modern solution while preserving the authentic taste that has made Hiap Joo famous. Payment is cashless only (PayWave, Apple Pay, Google Pay), and the machine can stock up to 48 boxes at a time.
